Yuguda is an economist, banker and investment manager, with over 30 years’ experience in financial services working with CBN and SEC Nigeria.

On Monday, Lamido Yuguda assumed office at the capital markets’ regulatory agency as the new Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Nigeria. 

According to the new statement released in Abuja by SEC Head of Corporate Communication, Efe Ebelo, he said Mr Yuguda assumed duty alongside three new executive commissioners of the commission.

The three new commissioners are Reginald Karawusa, Ibrahim Boyi and Dayo Obisan.

In a remark, the outgoing Acting Director-General, Mary Uduk, said the commission had in the past few years undertaken major reforms and achieved some regulatory milestones including in the area of cryptocurrency regulation.

The new SEC DG said the capital market was an important part of any economy with a lot of potential for growth and development of the country.

In line with the words of Dr Agama, the SEC representative at the just concluded “Cryptocurrency and Regulations Conference”, Mr Yuguda assured that the new management would work to the best of its ability to protect investors at all levels in other to ensure a safe ground for new entrants at all cost.

He further explained that investor protection would be at the centre of the initiatives of the new management. He also warned that any operator that defrauds investors would not go free.

” We want to assure investors that this market is for them and we are ready to do everything to ensure that we increase investor enlightenment through education, robust regulation and fair dealing.

“For those that want to defraud investors, there would be no respite,” he added.

Profile of Mr Lamido Yuguda

Mr Yuguda holds a B.Sc. degree in Accounting from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and an M.Sc. in Money, Banking and Finance in 1991 from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom.

He also holds a Certificate in Financial Asset Management and Engineering from the Swiss Finance Institute, Geneva, Switzerland and a Certificate in Investment Performance Management from the CFA Institute, Charlottesville, Virginia, USA.

Yuguda is an economist, banker and investment manager, with over 30 years’ experience in financial services working with CBN and SEC Nigeria.

He began his career with Central Bank of Nigeria back in 1984, shortly after he graduated from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. 

He worked as a Senior Supervisor of the Foreign operations department, which manages Nigeria’s external debt records.

In 1985, he moved to the Banking Supervision Department and had the task of handling bank licensing and prudential regulations.

In 1988, through another in-house reassignment, he was sent to the Debt Conversion Committee Secretariat to manage the Nigerian Debt Conversion Programme together with the pioneer staff in the secretariat.

Then in 1992, he moved back to the Foreign Operations Department and soon after became the Senior Manager of the Investment Office. 

At the Foreign Operations Department, he was responsibe for managing Nigeria’s external debt service, as well as managing the investment of the CBN’s external reserves in a liquid portfolio of cash, fixed-term deposits, and foreign government treasury bills. 

He is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and a holder of the CFA charter.
