During the just concluded Nigeria’s May Day event, focusing on entrepreneurship, human capital development, and overcoming Nigeria’s economic challenges.

CEO of Moniepoint Eniolorunda highlighted the lack of qualifications from applicants from Nigeria. He stressed that while the company has 500 job open positions, the Nigerian applicants lack the needed qualifications to fill these positions due to the company’s need to meet global standards.

He claimed that the reasons for this circles around; a failing educational system, social media distractions, hookup culture, yahoo mentality, and a growing wave of laziness around the country’s youth.

Backlash from Nigerian Twitter

Just after the event, Nigerians on Twitter started arguing that the issue isn’t just the failing educational systems but that the company and similar Fintech companies in the country do not value Nigerian employees.

Samkayz on Twitter argues that he knows someone who was hired by a foreign company after he got a rejection letter from Moniepoint.

Salako also highlights that the issue isn’t from the applicants but from the company and its HR team hiring process. Moreover, some others claim that the 500 job openings advertised by Moniepoint doesn’t exist but only to attract investors under the guise that the company is growing fast.
