South African Man Arrested for Bitcoin-Funded Terrorism

A 35-year-old man in Johannesburg was arrested for allegedly using Bitcoin to fund terrorism, violating South Africa’s Protection of Constitutional Democracy Act.

Investigation: Authorities began probing in 2018 after suspicious transactions flagged by the Financial Intelligence Centre.

Bitcoin Use: In 2017, the suspect transferred $614 (ZAR11,500) in Bitcoin via Luno to a wallet linked to terror funding.

Raid: A raid on Oct. 24 uncovered unsecured firearms and other evidence.

The suspect will appear in court on Jan. 6, as authorities collaborate with global agencies to stop illicit financial flows.
