South African Airways becomes Africa’s first major carrier to embed Bitcoin directly into its reservation platform.
South African Airways (SAA) now allows passengers to pay with Bitcoin via its website and mobile app, without redirecting to third-party marketplaces. Transactions are processed through local fintech partners that verify blockchain payments, convert Bitcoin to rand instantly, and credit SAA in local currency — limiting exposure to price volatility.
Customers complete payments by scanning a QR code from their crypto wallets. For now, only Bitcoin is supported, though the airline has signaled openness to stablecoins pending regulatory clarity and demand.
The rollout follows crypto oversight by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority and compliance requirements enforced by the Financial Intelligence Centre South Africa. For SAA, which entered business rescue in 2019, the move reinforces its restructuring and digital modernization strategy while positioning the airline as innovation-forward in Africa’s growing crypto market.
