Last week, Atsuko Sato the kindergarten teacher behind the arrival of Doge into the internet, announced that the iconic photo of her female Shiba Inu dog would be auctioned as an NFT, and all proceeds would go to charity.

The image of her excited-looking Shiba Inu has been considered as one of the internet’s most iconic and renowned memes, sold as a nonfungible token, or NFT, for $4 million, making it the most expensive meme NFT of all time.

On Friday June 11th, the auction winner, @pleasrdao, placed a winning bid of 1,696.9 of the cryptocurrency Ethereum, worth approximately $4 million, It managed to race ahead of @TwoDollaHotDoge, an avid Dogecoin supporter, during the last minutes of the auction according to the auction site Zora.

The term “Doge” stems from the Flash cartoon “Homestar Runner.” In a 2005 episode, the titular character calls another character his “D-O-G-E.” Five years later, in 2010, Sato posted the image of Kabosu to her blog, not realizing the photo would take on a life of its own.

Doge had a massive spike in popularity this year because of the Dogecoin cryptocurrency, which is being constantly shilled by Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Before Doge, Zoë Roth’s “Disaster Girl” was the most expensive meme NFT. It was sold for $573,136 back in April.
