Just in, the Federal Government alerts Nigerians on the existence of an Android-based malicious and fraudulent Coronavirus Ransomware Application.
This coronavirus ransomware app according to the federal government claims to provide updates on the virus and infections near it’s victim, the user.
Segun Adeyemi, Special Assistant To The President, Office of the Minister of Information and Culture, in a statement issued in Abuja today, notes that the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the Ransomware restricts the user from accessing personal data and accounts, threatening deletion, only if the user pays one hundred US Dollars ($100) in Bitcoin within 48 hours.
Going further, Lai Mohammed said the Ransomware App was detected on the website www.coronavirusapp.site . This site prompts the user to download an Android App purportedly for coronavirus map tracking and heat map visuals.
According to the Minister of Information, this is in confirmation to the warnings against cyber criminals looking to exploit the growing spread of the virus for personal gains.
The Information Minister calls on the general public to be aware of the coronavirus ransomeware to avoid downloading the Ransomware App.
He equally encouraged Nigerians to always seek updates on the pandemic from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and other reliable sources out there.
