A certain biblical message was seen encrypted in a transaction in block number 666,666 of the Bitcoin (BTC) blockchain.

The message is a quotation from the sixth book in the New Testament, St.Paul’s epistle to the Romans. The message was first seen by @emzy@bitcoinhackers.org, it reads:

“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good – Romans 12:21.”

The transaction in question saw an equal amount of Bitcoin — 432,100 satoshis ($160) — sent to two different addresses. The first several characters of those addresses contain the words “God” and “Bible.”

The person who sent the transaction paid over $50 in fees. This is more than 5x the normal peak average fee on Bitcoin blockchain in a day via bitinfocharts.com records. This suggests that the sender’s interest was to solely have the transaction, and the message, included in block 666,666 specifically.

Is this the First Time?

Well, this looks like the third time it’s happening. The first time a message was encrypted through a block was in the first block mined on Bitcoin network, known as the “genesis block.” The first block reads;

“The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks.”

The second scenario last year during what professionals called the “first phase of the United States Federal Reserve’s money-printing spree”, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Block number 630,000 revealed the following message:

“NYTimes 09/Apr/2020 With $2.3T Injection, Fed’s Plan Far Exceeds 2008 Rescue.”

Aside these top scenarios, people usually encrypt messages on Bitcoin blockchain through a sent transaction. These messages varies from different individual and organisation memories and records.

Quick Facts: The first message recorded on Bitcoin blockchain network was in 2009. It was encrypted in the bitcoin blockchain’s genesis block.
