Nigeria’s tax authority has raised the bar for 2026, setting an ambitious revenue goal to deepen fiscal sustainability.

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has set a revenue target of N40.7 trillion for 2026, underscoring the Federal Government’s push to expand non-oil income, improve compliance, and reduce borrowing.

The target, announced at the NRS Management Retreat in Abuja, represents a 44% increase from the N28.29 trillion collected in 2025 and more than six times the N6.4 trillion recorded in 2021.

Speaking at the retreat, Executive Director Amina Ado said the gains were driven by reforms, not inflation. “We were given a target of N25.2 trillion… and we delivered N28.23 trillion, achieving 112% of our target,” she said.

Non-oil revenue remains the main growth engine, projected to rise from N18 trillion in 2025 to N24.84 trillion in 2026, led by VAT, Company Income Tax, and improved enforcement. Oil revenue is expected to grow only marginally, reinforcing Nigeria’s shift away from oil dependence.
