A lawyer representing Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) announced on Wednesday morning at the Federal High Court in Abuja said that the Nigerian government, under President Bola Tinubu, is dropping all criminal charges against Tigran Gambaryan.
Gambaryan is an executive at Binance Holdings. Gambaryan had been facing money laundering charges and had been in detention since April.
Gambaryan’s trial was postponed to October 25 because he was absent in court. This followed after the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS) informed Justice Emeka Nwite that Gambaryan was critically ill and unable to attend during Friday’s hearing.

Gambaryan’s lawyer, Mark Mordi, SAN, claimed that he was unaware of why Gambaryan was not present, when the judge asked about his client’s absence. The EFCC’s lawyer, Ekele Iheanacho, SAN, also expressed surprise at his absence.
The EFCC clearly stated that Gambaryan, a U.S. citizen, was simply and basically an employee at Binance and had no say over the company’s major financial decisions. Led by Mark Mordi, his legal team concurred with this, emphasizing that Gambaryan was not involved in the company’s larger financial operations. This resulted in the withdrawal of all charges against Gambaryan.
