Vitalik Buterin, one of Ethereum’s co-founders, announced significant leadership changes for the Ethereum Foundation. He explained that these changes aim to focus on technical expertise and better communication between the foundation and the Ethereum community of builders.

Buterin also emphasized that those who have different visions for Ethereum are welcome to start their own organizations.

Goals for the Leadership Overhaul

In a post on January 18, Buterin listed goals for the changes. These include supporting developers working on decentralized applications (dApps) and promoting values like decentralization, censorship resistance, and privacy. He made it clear that the foundation would avoid political lobbying or taking a dominant role in Ethereum’s overall development.

These leadership changes are coming after a difficult year for the Ethereum Foundation in 2024. During this time, the foundation faced criticism over its spending, project roadmaps, and the roles of its personnel. These issues led to doubt and dissatisfaction within the Ethereum community.

Conflict of Interest Issues in 2024

In May 2024, the Ethereum Foundation introduced a conflict of interest policy after some of its researchers took paid advisory roles at the EigenLayer Foundation, which works on Ethereum’s restaking protocol. Justin Drake, a key researcher, was one such person. He eventually stepped down from his advisory role in November 2024, apologized to the community, and promised not to take similar roles in the future.

The previous year, 2024, was one hell of a year for Etheurem as in March 2024, Ethereum released the Dencun upgrade, which dramatically reduced transaction fees for Ethereum’s layer-2 networks by up to 99%. This led to a rapid increase in the number of layer-2 networks, growing to 55 by 2024, according to data from L2Beat.

The growth of layer-2 networks raised concerns that they were taking revenue away from Ethereum’s base layer. During the summer of 2024, revenues on the Ethereum base layer dropped by 99%. However, by the end of the year, the base layer revenues recovered to levels seen before the Dencun upgrade.

Final Thoughts

The decision to refocus the Ethereum Foundation on technical expertise and decentralization is a positive step. It ensures that Ethereum continues to align with its core values while addressing internal and community concerns.
