Tunisia Adopts Unified Arab System for Diploma Verification

Tunisia has officially joined the Unified Arab System for Diploma Authenticity Verification, a blockchain-based platform aimed at streamlining degree validation across Arab nations.

How It Works

Launched on February 28, the system enables recruiters and agencies to quickly verify diplomas from Tunisian universities. Tunisia previously piloted the program alongside Algeria, Egypt, and Libya, and after its success, it formalized adoption by signing an agreement with the Arab League Educational, Cultural, and Scientific Organization (ALESCO) in November 2024.

The system collects and stores unique credential data onchain, ensuring security and accessibility for fast verification.

Potential Challenges

While blockchain protects stored data from tampering, it cannot validate the authenticity of credentials before they are uploaded. If fraudulent certificates are entered into the system, they will be secured but not flagged as fake.

“The implementation of this unified system will … combat certificate forgery, bolstering the credibility of our educational institutions,” said Mohamed Ould Amar, ALESCO’s director-general.

Blockchain-Based Verification in Africa

Tunisia is not alone in using blockchain for credential verification. Mauritius developed eVerify, a system based on Singapore’s Ethereum-based Open Attestation technology. It allows instant validation by scanning a QR code linked to a government database.

This move marks a significant step in enhancing transparency and trust in academic qualifications across the Arab world.
