Tether, the multi-billion-dollar stablecoin company, is venturing into green energy and battery solutions in Africa. CEO Paolo Ardoino announced that the initiative involves installing solar-powered kiosks to recharge batteries, with payments available in bitcoin, USDT, or local currency through a monthly subscription model.
Empowering Communities with Clean Energy and Crypto
Africa faces a severe power crisis, with only 20% of sub-Saharan citizens having access to electricity. Tether’s solar kiosks aim to bridge this energy gap while also serving as tech hubs to educate users about bitcoin and USDT.
Ardoino described the project as a stepping stone toward a tech-based distribution network, stating:
“Imagine a kiosk in Africa, with solar panels on top to recharge hundreds of high-performance batteries, offering monthly subscriptions to the local community (payable in local currency, Bitcoin LN, or USDt).”
Massive Rollout and Crypto Adoption
Tether hinted at a large-scale expansion, with potential plans for 10,000 to 100,000 kiosks. The initiative is already active, operating in stealth mode, with hundreds of kiosks currently providing services.Beyond Africa, Tether is broadening its focus, investing in green energy, AI, bitcoin mining, biotech, and agriculture in emerging markets like Latin America.
This aligns with its goal of expanding financial access in dollar-scarce regions.
