SA Competition Commission Pushes Google, Meta to Pay Local Media
Share this:

South Africa’s Competition Commission is pushing global tech firms like Google, Meta, and X to compensate local news publishers for using their content.

Key Proposals:

Google could pay R300M–R500M ($16.3M–$27M) annually for 3–5 years.

YouTube should increase revenue share to 70% for local broadcasters like SABC.

Media houses should have collective bargaining rights with AI firms over content use.

Why?

Digital platforms profit from news content while local media loses ad revenue.

News visibility reduced on Meta and X, hurting publishers’ traffic.

Challenges:

Global tech firms may resist (as seen in Australia & Canada).

Legislation might be needed if platforms refuse compliance.

If enforced, these measures could reshape SA’s media landscape and sustain quality journalism.
