Nigerian Government Launches 3M Technical Talent Program

As part of the “Renewed Hope” agenda, The Nigerian government has launched a major program to boost technical skills nationwide known as the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) initiative, which aims to develop a robust technical talent pool that can strengthen Nigeria’s digital economy and position the country as a global talent exporter.

According to Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, each phase of the 3MTT program will be carried out with support from government agencies, educational institutions, development partners, and private-sector companies as the program which started with 30,000 Nigerians making up 1% of the 3 million target in its first phase, has recently chosen an additional 270,000 individuals for the second cohort, reaching 10% of the overall goal.

Key Skills for a Digital Economy

Participants in the 3MTT program are being trained and nurtured in practical skills that enhance various digital and non-digital roles. The curriculum includes:

  • Techniques in Digital Marketing and SEO to improve online presence and attract customers.
  • Project Management Software to organize and manage tasks efficiently.
  • Cloud Platform Navigation: Learning to use cloud-based services like Google Cloud and AWS.
  • Data Analysis and Visualization to make informed business decisions.
  • Customer Relationship Management (CRM) which entails the use of software to manage customer interactions.
  • Accounting Software to manage finances.
  • Creative skills in graphics and UX/UI design to enhance visual content and improve user experiences.

New Advisory Committee

To ensure the success of the program, the government has set up an advisory committee of tech industry leaders that will guide and oversee the 3MTT program’s implementation. The following notable individuals were appointed:

Emeka Afigbo (Chairman): Afigbo, with experience from Meta and Google, will lead the committee, bringing expertise in building developer ecosystems across Africa as he was a Senior Director of Developer Success at Okta.

Iyinoluwa Aboyeji: Co-founder of Future Africa, Andela, and Flutterwave, providing deep insights into Africa’s startup and investment landscape.

Ope Bukola: An edtech expert whose experience aligns with 3MTT’s mission to scale up tech education across Africa.

Oji Udezue: Former Chief Product Officer at Typeform, Calendly, and Twitter, he will contribute his product management expertise.

Joy Omoregie: GTM Acceleration Lead for EMEA at AWS, with valuable knowledge in go-to-market strategies necessary for digital transformation.

Bola Lawal: CEO of PremiaBN, brings a foundation in digital finance and business development, aligning training with market needs.

Amal Hassan: CEO of Outsource Global, a leader in job creation and talent development, specifically within Nigeria.

Through the 3MTT program, the government aims to position Nigerian citizens to embrace innovations set to spread globally at a rapid pace.
