The Federal Inland Revenue Services, FIRS Nigeria had deployed a new electronic tax service (e-services) to automatically process tax payments in Nigeria.

The new electronic tax service will ensure transparency in the tax administration for both tax payers and administrators.

According to the FIRS chairman, it’s necessary that the administration improves it’s ability to tax economic activities in the digital space.

He also said that the digital space is the new gold at the third annual Nigeria Tax Research Network conference. The conference was held at the FIRS Training School in Durumi, Abuja.

The theme of the conference is: Revenue Challenges Online and Offline: Bridging the Digital Divide in an Analogue Economy.

“The volume of economic activities associated with businesses like Uber, Amazon and our own Jumia and Interswitch is a further confirmation of the aptness of the theme, ” he said

“Furthermore, it presents a forum for the discussion of current ideas, new trends and future prospects of revenue collection,” he said.

Fowler also said that FIRS is committed to sponsoring researches on economic development and efficient tax service in Nigeria. This will help them in discharging its statutory functions effectively following the FIRS Establishment Act.

This will include ensuring effective tax service for all online transactions in Nigeria. The Finance Minister, Zainab previously said that no salary earner in Nigeria will own a bank account without having the Tax Identification Number.

This is to ensure that all salary earners and companies are taxed effectively using the electronic tax service. This will ensure fair play and proper accountability in the tax administration.
