A British man recognized as James Howell has been trying to retrieve his hardware wallet since 2014 from his local dumpster. He has been trying to persuade his local council to allow him to search for his hardware wallet containing 7,500 (BTC) Bitcoin (USD 247m)in the state’s dumpsite to no avail.

He now wants to implore high-tech efforts to find his fortune which he accidentally threw away eight years ago, However, The Newport city council will not let him search the dump for his hard drive for several years. The council has continually rejected his requests despite Howells’ offer to divide the tokens with the council and the local charity outlets.

In an interview with The Sun, The 35 years old IT worker, now an internet sensation, especially during the bull market when the price of BTC starts to climb as updates on his story appear frequently in the UK press.

Howells claims that he has backing from what he refers to as a “super-rich hedge fund” that will pay for the search “in exchange for the lion’s share of his fortune”. He has also offered to give the council USD 76m if he finds the device.

Howells told the media outlet “This would be a proper search, not just somebody going in with a bucket and spade. We have a system with multiple conveyer-belts, X-ray scanning devices and an AI scanning device that would be trained to recognize items that are a similar size and density to the hard drive.”

He is not asking to search the entire dump according to him, comprehensive study of aerial photographs of the site has led him to conclude that the HDD is in a 200 sqm area that may be around 15m deep,  conceding that there would likely be “between 300,000-400,000 tonnes of waste to look through.”

Even after James Howell’s optimistic explanations and glorious high-tech gadgets to make the search easier, the council narrated through a spokeswoman the same line it had been using for year’s on the matter “ The cost of digging up the landfill, storing and treating the waste could run into millions of pounds, without any guarantee of either finding it or it still being in working order.”

She added that the council has told Mr. Howells on several occasions that “excavation is not possible under our licensing permit and the excavation itself would have a huge environmental impact on the surrounding area.”

Nevertheless, Howells insists that his plan is solid, explaining that he wants to conduct “a delicate search” that wouldn’t damage the hard drive in the process.”
