Kenya Adventist Church Rocked by Optcoin Crypto Scandal

Kenya’s Adventist Church faces fresh turmoil after a crypto investment scheme triggered financial losses and internal investigations nationwide.

The controversy centers on Optcoin, a cryptocurrency and forex trading platform promoted among members in Nairobi. Several investors claim they were introduced to the scheme by Paul Mwangi, former president of the Central Kenya Conference and now Executive Secretary of the East Kenya Union Conference.

Church letters dated late December 2025 and early January 2026 acknowledged reports linking members and leaders to the platform but stated the church “takes no liability” for personal investments. Members were urged to report cases to authorities.

Allegations have circulated that some groups temporarily used church tithe and offering funds for crypto trades before remitting them. These claims remain unverified.

Mwangi has said he also suffered losses and denies orchestrating any scheme. The fallout has intensified governance tensions, triggered calls for transparency, and deepened trust concerns within Kenya’s rapidly growing Adventist community.
