Ethiopia has taken decisive action against sports betting firms and illegal financial networks threatening economic stability nationwide.

Ethiopia has officially revoked the operating licenses of all sports betting companies, ordering an immediate shutdown of both physical betting centers and online platforms. The directive, issued by the Ethiopian Lottery Service, took effect on December 15, 2025, following federal government orders over widespread illegal activities.

Under the new rules, betting operators must stop accepting new wagers, assist with settling ongoing bets, and halt all deposit services connected to betting organizations.

Authorities said the decision was taken to protect public interest, citing repeated license violations, unlawful financial transfers, and activities that endanger national security and facilitate money laundering.

The shutdown comes amid a nationwide crackdown led by the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) targeting illegal foreign exchange trading, crypto-related transfers, and financial fraud. Security forces arrested 112 suspects, including eight foreign nationals, and froze 519 bank accounts linked to illicit transactions exceeding $50 million.

Officials warned that illegal forex activities undermine Ethiopia’s economic reforms and currency stability, urging citizens to report suspicious financial behavior.
