South Africa just took a massive leap in crypto adoption — everyday shopping with Bitcoin and stablecoins is now possible.
A new integration between QR payments provider Scan to Pay and Bitcoin payments platform MoneyBadger now allows South Africans to spend crypto directly at over 650,000 retail outlets nationwide. Shoppers can pay using Bitcoin, stablecoins, or other digital assets from exchanges like Binance, Luno, VALR, and Blink, simply by scanning a QR code at checkout.
Merchants receive payments in South African rand, eliminating the need for users to convert their crypto into fiat before purchases. This seamless system leverages MoneyBadger’s platform to link exchange wallets and Lightning accounts, enabling payments for groceries, meals, and online shopping across major retailers such as Shoprite, Checkers, Makro, and Vodacom.
According to Theo Koma, product owner at Scan to Pay, this move marks a major step toward financial inclusion, bridging the gap between digital assets and everyday commerce in South Africa.
