Nigeria’s trade patterns shifted sharply in Q2 2025 as Togo surged past South Africa to become its biggest African partner.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, Nigeria’s exports to Togo jumped six-fold in Q2 2025 to N811.97 billion, up from N134.8 billion in Q1. Crude oil accounted for N113.3 billion, while non-crude products dominated at nearly N699 billion.

Togo also became Nigeria’s largest African import source, supplying N211.99 billion worth of goods (25.8% of imports). This rise reflects Lomé’s role as a major re-export and logistics hub for West Africa.

South Africa, once Nigeria’s top partner, saw trade drop to N473.65 billion, a 33% decline from Q1. Imports from South Africa also fell to N115.15 billion, highlighting Nigeria’s pivot toward West African partners.

Other shifts in Q2:
• Ghana climbed to 4th place with N307.47 billion exports, split evenly between crude and non-crude goods.
• Mauritius entered the top five with N264.98 billion in non-crude trade.
• Ivory Coast held 3rd place at N408.97 billion.
• Equatorial Guinea and Cameroon joined the top 10, while Angola and Senegal dropped.
Overall, Nigeria’s total exports rose 10.5% to N22.75 trillion, while imports dipped slightly to N15.29 trillion, pushing the trade surplus up 44% to N7.46 trillion.
