Ripple launches its U.S. dollar stablecoin RLUSD in Africa, boosting payments, liquidity, and humanitarian aid through local partners.

Ripple has introduced its stablecoin Ripple USD (RLUSD) to African institutions through partnerships with Chipper Cash, VALR, and Yellow Card. The company says RLUSD enables cross-border payments, liquidity management, and on-chain settlement.

Launched in late 2024, RLUSD is regulated by New York’s Department of Financial Services and now has over $700 million in supply across Ethereum and XRP Ledger. Ripple executives note growing global demand, with Africa chosen as a key expansion market.

Chipper Cash CEO Ham Serunjogi called RLUSD “transformative” for cross-border payments in Africa, while Ripple highlighted ongoing humanitarian pilots in Kenya. Mercy Corps Ventures is testing RLUSD-based drought and rainfall insurance programs for farmers, using smart contracts to trigger timely payouts.

RLUSD is already available through major exchanges including Bitstamp, Kraken, Gemini, and Uphold. The stablecoin sector now holds a market value of $285 billion, though economists warn of regulatory and tax challenges as adoption grows.
