South Africa races to secure a trade deal with the U.S. before steep tariffs hit exports on August 1.
With a 30% tariff looming, South Africa is still waiting for a U.S. response to its trade proposal.
Trade Minister Parks Tau confirmed that while talks are ongoing, no deal has been finalized yet. The proposed framework aims to avoid tariffs set for August 1, 2025. So far, the U.S. hasn’t responded substantively.
Tensions are high. U.S. President Donald Trump’s stance on tariffs and South Africa’s internal policies—like race laws and its genocide case against Israel—have strained relations.
Still, South Africa hopes for a last-minute breakthrough. Trump recently lowered tariffs for the EU and Japan to 15%–20% after talks. It’s unclear if the same will happen with South Africa.
The next few days are critical. The outcome could reshape South Africa’s trade strategy and impact its economy.
