Nigeria’s Web3 Developers’ scene booming, but challenges around compensation and full-time roles remain.

Nigeria is emerging as Africa’s Web3 powerhouse, now accounting for 4% of new global developers in 2024, the highest in Africa, according to Hashed Emergent’s Nigeria Web3 Landscape 2024 Report. The country’s developer community hit 1.1 million in 2024, reflecting 28% YoY growth—building on a 46% rise in 2023.

Key insights show:

• 86% of Web3 developers are under 27; over 50% joined in the past year.

• Female participation rose to 17% in three years.

• Grassroots platforms like Web3Bridge, Web3Ladies, and Solana/Base bootcamps play a major role.

Among surveyed developers:

• 39% contribute code, 29% work on documentation, 18% fix bugs.

• 65% engage in writing, meetups, or community building.

• Yet only 15% hold full-time roles in Web3. Most freelance, with 45% paid in stablecoins—a hedge against naira volatility. Despite this, 90% earn below global standards, and only 12% are satisfied with their pay.

Demographics reveal nearly half are students, 6% are startup founders (up 35% YoY), and 41% are freelancers or employed.

Technical skills focus on:

JavaScript (50%) – preferred for ease of transition from Web2

Solidity (21%) – used for Ethereum and EVM chains

Top chains: Solana, Ethereum, Base, Starknet, TON, Polygon, and BNB.

Top verticals: DeFi and payments (35%), Gaming/NFT (24%), Consumer/SocialFi (21%).

The report calls for more bootcamps, hackathons, and community support to boost the talent pipeline and retain Nigeria’s Web3 momentum.
