Can BRICS Benefit from Trump’s Tariff Policies?

Donald Trump’s re-imposed tariffs, including a 10% baseline from April 9, have sparked fresh turbulence in global trade. Targeting imports—particularly from China—these tariffs disrupt established supply chains and raise questions about the future of global economic alliances. For BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa), the challenge is real, but so is the opportunity to reshape their economic future.

China, the primary target, faces shrinking U.S. exports, pushing it to explore new markets and deepen trade within BRICS. Intra-BRICS cooperation could rise as member states seek alternatives to U.S.-centric trade. India, Brazil, and South Africa may benefit from supply chain diversification, while Russia continues leveraging resource exports. Meanwhile, initiatives like the New Development Bank and talk of a new reserve currency position BRICS to reduce reliance on the dollar and Western institutions.

Still, obstacles persist. Political instability in Brazil and South Africa, commodity dependence, and economic diversity within the bloc complicate collective strategies. Cohesion is crucial but not guaranteed, and without coordinated policy efforts, BRICS may struggle to fully capitalize on the shifting landscape.

In conclusion, while Trump’s tariffs present short-term risks, they also open the door for BRICS to rise as a counterweight to Western economic dominance—if they can unify, stabilize internally, and innovate diplomatically.
