Bitcoin Mining Meets Renewable Energy: Zambia’s Hydropowered Crypto Boom
Share this:

Deep in Zambia’s northwest, near the roaring Zambezi River, a bitcoin mining operation thrives, powered entirely by surplus electricity from the Zengamina Hydro-Power Plant. Run by Gridless, a Kenya-based company, this setup leverages clean energy to fuel 120 mining computers, generating profits while supporting local development.

Originally built with UK charity funds, the hydro plant struggled financially due to low electricity demand. Bitcoin mining changed its fortunes, now accounting for 30% of its revenue and keeping power affordable for the nearby town. Locals, like barber Damian, have seen their lives transformed by stable electricity, which has enabled businesses to flourish.

As the plant prepares to connect to the national grid, Gridless plans to move operations to new locations across Africa, targeting underutilized hydro plants. With ambitions to build its own run-of-river hydroelectric systems, the company is pioneering a model where cryptocurrency mining and renewable energy go hand in hand, proving that bitcoin can drive sustainable development.
