Founded in 2021, Bitcoin Ekasi is transforming financial inclusion in Mossel Bay’s township communities. Under the umbrella of The Surfer Kids nonprofit, it has introduced Bitcoin to merchants, educators, and students, fostering grassroots adoption despite initial skepticism.

Through consistent community engagement, Bitcoin Ekasi now has 32 shops accepting Bitcoin, school teachers onboarded with Bitcoin wallets, and students earning sats for educational achievements. The initiative also operates a support center for Bitcoin education, with plans to establish a permanent facility.

Founder Hermann Vivier highlights the project’s impact:

“We get three times the amount of work done with the same funds because we operate on a Bitcoin standard.”

Challenges remain, particularly in overcoming literacy barriers and trust issues, but Bitcoin Ekasi’s low-time preference approach ensures sustainability. As the project expands, it serves as a model for community-driven Bitcoin adoption, blending financial empowerment with social development.
